I’m a 25 year old architecture graduate following my ambition to kickstart a cultural revolution in my hometown East Kilbride.
Growing up here has its benefits, space, nature and safety gives you freedom when you’re a kid, but as I grew into an adult the town became more like a prison that many people my age dreamed of escaping. I suppose that’s why I went off to study architecture, from a young age I felt the impact of design and I wanted to make places better for people. My studies helped me understand how my experiences growing up related to the design of my environment and I could even define it using one word – unsustainable.
Things need to change. East Kilbride needs to become a self-sustaining system and that means encouraging young people to stay and invest their ideas here. I believe in leading by example, so I intend to break the mould, to stay, and set up a cultural enterprise that will form a supportive community amongst local creatives.
For now it’s just me working on this and I’m starting from nothing, so I’m starting small – building a food trailer/community space for local artists that will hopefully grow to become the enterprise I’m dreaming of.
