Hello!
My name is Choirstaidh, I am a Gaelic-speaking multidisciplinary artist and content creator from Greenock on the West Coast of Scotland, living and working in Glasgow. I grew up in Gaelic Medium Education, before studying at the Glasgow School of Art where I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking in 2018. I am a freelance artist based at Wild and Kind in Bridgeton, and my personal work mainly centres around Gaelic language and culture, Scottish and Irish folklore, grief, love, and childhood.
I have a clothing line titled ‘Bragail’, meaning brazen in Scottish Gaelic, which celebrates the rebellious spirit of the Gael, which launched in 2022. To date, I have sold garments, stickers, and prints internationally, largely due to my social media presence on Tiktok.
In February 2023, I was named one of Seachdain na Gàidhlig’s (World Gaelic Week) two ambassadors, following my 2021-22 award of Young Gaelic Ambassador of the Year by Bòrd na Gàidhlig at the Scottish Gaelic Awards.
In 2022, I was awarded alongside my brother, Musician Billy McArthur, the FilmG Choice award for our short film ‘Priob’. Priob is a film about honouring your inner child, and being guided by those who raised them, wherever they may be now.
In 2022, I was commissioned by Theatre Gu Leòr to produce a piece of digital theatre for the ‘Ceangal/Cwlwm’ project, entitled ‘NicFiona’. ‘NicFiona’ follows four generations of women from my family while documenting the social history of the working class women of Inverclyde.
I hosted the BBC ALBA childrens’ strand ‘A’ Chùil’ in 2021, after producing content for MG ALBA’s ‘A-Staigh’ in 2020 and catching the eye of producers. I also worked at MG ALBA as a co-production associate for two years, between 2020 and ’22, before going freelance in the Autumn of 2022.
