Jen Athan is a composer and producer based in Glasgow. Her work spans many different styles and genres and typically features her love of melody driven composition. She has written music for theatre shows and short films and enjoys creating music to accompany a narrative. Jen also has experience recording and writing with other bands and artists and spends much of her time writing music in her home studio.

She began her career as an instrumentalist where she worked with a wide range of different bands and artists creating melodies and layering sound onto pre-existing tracks. After spending so much time in a studio environment, she discovered her love for music production and made the decision to study Commercial Music at university- which she graduated from with a First-Class Honours Degree in the summer of 2018.

In 2017 she was a given the opportunity to work with Scottish Youth Theatre as part of their Family Storytime Company. This involved co-writing music and lyrics for the company’s early years shows for 0-5 year olds and their parents/carers. Her experience writing music for early years inspired her to score and record the music for the short film Cinderella by Lotte Reiniger.

Jen released her solo piano EP Vinter Allée in 2018 with one of the pieces ‘For Sebastien’ featuring in the sold-out performance of Kid Astronaut – which she also co-wrote. Her sound design work was also featured in the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival as part of the performance of Butterfly which she wrote for their scratch night in Glasgow.

As a part of a post-production team, she won the Music for Film and Sound Aesthetic award presented by her university for the composition, Foley and mixing of a short film in the summer of 2018. Jen was also named as a finalist in Morley College London’s Sampling Holst competition in 2018 with her work being featured on the upcoming album set for release in 2019. Jen hopes to continue her work producing and creating new music and is currently focusing on projects embracing diversity in the arts and creating work that is accessible to all.
