Woodlands Community Development Trust
Woodlands Community Garden has been built by the community for the community. Since 2010 we have transformed a derelict gap site into a thriving outdoor community centre, that is used to grow a community as well as growing food. We are based at 91-10 West Princes Street, G4 9BY - lying between Great Western Road and Woodlands Road, very close to St Georges Cross Underground.
Around a third of the garden is dedicated to raised beds giving local people the chance to growing their own veg, herbs and fruit in a friendly and supportive environmnet. The rest of the garden is a shared resource, with the garden being designed to accommodate social, cultural and environmental activities. We have a meeting hub made from recycled wood pallets that includes an outdoor stage and areas dedicated encouraging wildlife and bio-diversity.
We have hosted a wide range of arts events, including Harvest Festivals and artist in residencies, as well as run arts, crafts and spoken word workshops. Since January 2014 we have also been running weekly pop up community cafe events in a pioneering project to tackle food poverty and social isolation. The café takes place at our Fred Paton Centre base and includes weekly music workshops.
Outwith the community garden we are also busy with plans to transform the gap site next to the garden into Woodlands Workspace (artist studios and community hub building). Phase 1 of the building works will take place in in early 2017 and we hope the full project to be completed in early 2018
